So, you want to become a Freemason but aren’t quite sure how to go about it. As an organization, we wish for good men who will be about the work once they are raised to that honorable position of Master Mason. Consider well the obligation you would be willing to make to the Fraternity and whether you will be able to continue your commitment before striking out on this career path.
Requirements
There are only two requirements to become a mason:
- Be a man or 18 years of age and of good moral character
- Express a belief in a supreme being
The goal of Freemasonry is to take a good man and make him better. Freemasonry unites good men of every country, sect, and opinion, and conciliates true friendship
among those who might otherwise have remained at a perpetual distance.
Freemasonry is not a religion. Masonry is however religious in nature in that all masons must profess a belief in a supreme being. Freemasonry is not sectarian – any man may have his own belief in a supreme being, whatever that may be. It is the common belief of a supreme being and that we are all brothers which unites us. We respect all men for their individual religious beliefs.
The Process
After you research, ponder, and decide to join the fraternity, you may submit a petition to the lodge indicating your request to receive the degrees of Freemasonry. As part of the petition, you will need to submit two character references as well as two masons who can recommend you. One of your Masonic references needs to know you for at least 6 months. If you do not know another mason, please contact us. We would love to meet you and get to know you more. As you come to the activities and get to know us better, one of the brothers would be happy to sign your petition.
After submitting your petition, it will be read during the next lodge business meeting. The lodge will then assign a committee to contact you, your character references, and your masonic references to investigate your reasons for joining. The investigation committee will give their report during the next lodge meeting at which time the lodge will vote whether to accept you for the degrees. If all goes well, the lodge will be in contact to set up a date to be initiated into the first degree of Freemasonry.
